In a recent letter to Congress, former DHS Sec. Kirstjen Nielsen urged more funding for ICE, more “capacity” to detain families and children indefinitely, and the right to waive asylum seekers’ due process rights. There is no legitimate reason to put people in prison for exercising their legal right to asylum.
DHS-funded ICE prisons fail to uphold basic human decency. Each month, people die in ICE detention, hunger strikers are mocked and beaten, children are traumatized by separation, and dozens survive sexual assault. With ICE—an unregulated, unaccountable agency—harming detained people and in the absence of a legitimate reason for imprisoning them, we must find alternatives.
