The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Memphis Branch will host its annual Freedom Fund Luncheon on Saturday, March 17, 2018 from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Hilton Hotel (929 Ridge Lake Blvd, Memphis, TN 38120). The speaker for the Freedom Fund Luncheon will be National NAACP Board Chair, Leon Russell. Co-chairs for the event are Shelby County Schools Superintendent Dorsey Hopson, TN State Rep. Raumesh Akbari and WREG-TV anchorwoman Markova Reed as Mistress of Ceremony.
“We hope our members and those interested in justice for all, will attend the annual luncheon to hear from our National Board Chair Leon Russell about the new direction of the NAACP,” Deidre Malone, President, Executive Committee, NAACP Memphis Branch. “We also will pay homage to some of our current local civil rights leaders and those that helped pave the way for advancing the movement in Memphis.”
Leon W. Russell was elected Chairman of the NAACP National Board of Directors at its Annual Board of Directors meeting in New York on February 18, 2017 and has served as a member of the NAACP National Board of Directors for 27 years. Russell retired in January 2012 after serving as the Director of the Office of Human Rights for Pinellas County Government, Clearwater, Florida since January 1977. In this position, Russell was responsible for implementing the county’s Affirmative Action and Human Rights Ordinances which provide for the development of a racially and sexually diverse workforce reflecting the general make-up of the local civilian labor force and the implementation of the county’s Equal Employment Opportunity Programs.
