Mitch McConnell and 12 other male GOP senators unveiled the Trump(don’t)Care bill last Thursday. The bill was written in secret, but it’s no surprise that it steals healthcare from the poor to give tax breaks to the rich. For all of the reasons explained in this article, it is a tough bill to swallow. But don’t lose hope–the Democrats are united, which means Republicans can only afford to lose two votes. There are already five GOP senators who are opposing it outright.
Let’s break it down.
These 4 Republican senators on the far right believe that the bill doesn’t go far enough in repealing Obamacare (Wow. But yay!): Ted Cruz (Texas), Ron Johnson (Wisconsin), Mike Lee (Utah), Rand Paul (Kentucky).
On Friday, Senator Dean Heller of Nevada, who is considered a moderate Republican said that he cannot support a bill “that takes insurance away from tens of millions of Americans and hundreds of thousands of Nevadans”.
In addition to these five there are other GOP senators voicing concerns including the following:
- On the grounds that the bill cuts funding from Planned Parenthood: Susan Collins (Maine); Lisa Murkowski (Alaska)
- On the grounds that the bill cuts Medicaid funding to curb the opioid epidemic: Shelley Moore Capito (West Virginia); Rob Portman (Ohio)
The Republicans want to vote on the bill before the July 4th recess. All-of-us must stop this bill.
