This week for the first time in its 45-year history, Patagonia released a television ad. And they weren’t asking you to buy fleece. As we covered in April, Patagonia has actively opposed the Trump Administration’s attempt to privatize our national monuments, something that no President has ever done.

Here is a recap of what happened back in April:

  • Since 1906 (under the Antiquities Act) Presidents have been setting public lands aside for “historic, cultural, or scientific reasons”.
  • In April Trump signed an Executive Order which asked Secretary Ryan Zinke to review national monuments set aside by Presidents Clinton, Bush, and Obama.
  • After signing his order Trump said: “Tremendously positive things are going to happen on that incredible land, the likes of which there is nothing more beautiful anywhere in the world.”
  • This article details all of the already beautiful land we stand to lose to golf courses, gold towers, and oil drilling.
  • Patagonia’s CEO Rose Marcario immediately issued a powerful statement in response.

Secretary Zinke has spent the last few months taking public comment. It is no surprise that 99% of those who commented were opposed to reducing the size of our federal lands. But Zinke and Trump didn’t listen. Last week Secretary Zinke made his recommendations to Trump, in a memo that ought to be public but has not yet been disclosed. As the New York Times reported, Trump could reduce the size of the Bears Ears National Monument in Utah from 1.35 million to 160 thousand acres. Environmental groups, Native American tribes, and corporate leaders like Patagonia did not hesitate to speak up, and neither will we. The fate of these national monuments is being decided upon this week. We must fight for the national lands that belong to all-of-us.
