Last Friday, Donald Trump announced he would end payments to health insurers that are used to reduce costs for many low- and middle-income Americans. This reckless, unilateral act could lead to insurance companies’ raising premiums or leaving health insurance markets entirely, causing Americans to lose access to health care.
Fortunately, this week, Senators Lamar Alexander and Patty Murray, a Republican and a Democrat, announced a compromise by which Congress would ensure the funding of this commitment to Americans’ health care.
Now this compromise needs support from both parties in both houses—and it’s especially critical that Republicans speak up to support their constituents, introduce a similar measure in the House, and rebuke Trump’s attack on health care. Democrats as well can do their share, showing support for a bipartisan solution and calling on Republican colleagues to do the same.
This deal is a good first step towards stabilizing our healthcare system, but we know there is still much work to be done to find long term solutions—including fighting for a Medicare-for-all style system that recognizes health care as a fundamental right.
